My research focuses on how rehabilitation and exercise can restore function and improve cardiometabolic health after stroke and in other chronic conditions, with an emphasis on adults from communities underrepresented in rehabilitation research. As co-director of the Neurorehabilitation and Cardiometabolic Health Lab, I combine large-scale electronic health record (EHR) analysis with community-engaged research and exercise intervention trials. My current projects 1) use EHR data, including the NIH All of Us Research Program, to measure rehabilitation dose and its relationship to walking recovery and recurrent stroke, 2) partner with stroke survivors and care partners to understand barriers to exercise participation, and 3) develop digital health interventions to improve cardiometabolic risk factors. My previous work tested exercise interventions to improve cardiometabolic health in cancer survivors and older adults.
